So here’s the thing about learning French: the textbooks will teach you to conjugate être perfectly, but they won’t tell you what to say when your French friend texts you “mdr” and you have no idea what that means (it’s basically “lol,” btw).
That gap, between textbook French and real French, is exactly what this space is for.
What you’ll find here
I’ll be sharing a mix of content, all aimed at making French feel less like a subject you study and more like a language you actually use:
- French idioms and expressions you won’t find in Chapter 3 of your French textbook. Idioms, slang, sayings your French teacher never mentioned, the kind of phrases that make you sound like you’ve actually lived the language instead of just memorized it.
- Language and culture, side by side. French isn’t just vocabulary, it’s context. Expect posts that connect what you’re learning to how French speakers actually think, joke, and talk about the world around them.
- Recommendations worth your time. Books, shows, movies, and other resources I’ve found useful, not just anything with “French” in the title. If I point you toward something, it’s because I’d hand it or recommend it to a student, or a Francophile.
- Products for the French-obsessed. For when you want to wear your love of the language, not just speak it.
A bit about me
I’ve spent years in French teaching, linguistics, language assessment, and translation, the kind of work where precision actually matters. But I don’t think learning French has to feel like homework. My goal with this blog is to bring you what I know without the stiffness, so you walk away having learned something and maybe laughed once or twice.
